The top four teams from the qualifier, including Thimphu Raven FC, BFF Academy, Namlha FC, and Tensung FC, will now join the ranks of Paro FC, Thimphu City FC, Druk Lhayul FC, RTC FC, Transport United FC, and Ugyen Academy FC in the highly anticipated 2023 BPL.

Bashundhara Kings, which clinched the BPL title for a record 4th times in a row on Friday with three matches securing 46 points from 27 matches while the sixth times champions Dhaka Abahani Ltd are in the distant 2nd place with 34 points from 17 matches.

Other than that the bowlers took control of the innings, Ryan Burl the only other batsmen to reach double figures.

Thanks to Shanto and Rahim Sylhet Strikers headed in at 175, it now over to their bowlers. 

It came down to the final over, an early Liton Das half century putting Victorians on track to chase this one down.

Rubel Hossain (2/39) fought back, taking some important wickets but it would prove not quite enough as Johnson Charles (79*) smashed a half century of his own to win this one by 7 wickets.

While announcing the seven teams for the next cycle of the BPL, the BCB had also fixed the dates for the tournaments – BPL 2023 from January 6 to February 16, BPL 2024 from January 6 to February 17 and BPL 2025 from January 1 to February 11.

However, BCB officials said that they might have to change the dates of BPL as it clashed with leagues like the SA20, Australia’s Big Bash and UAE’s ILT20 as it became difficult for the franchises to get renowned stars of the shortest format to play in their tournament.

Nazmul said that at the moment they are finding it hard to get a slot for the next BPL due to the forthcoming general elections, scheduled to be held in January 2024, and added that they will have to play BPL in two parts due to security issues.

“We are not getting the slot for the next BPL and it is nearly impossible to bring out a slot. We have got one but we might need to have a gap in between if there is a general election where the security personnel will be needed,” Nazmul told reporters at the Sylhet International Stadium on Monday.

TROSSARD ALREADY AN ARSENAL BARGAIN

The reason the boys were very confident about playing their shots was due to the pitches during the BPL being very good. Even if we had the ability to play strokes, our boys were not confident enough in the past [due to the nature of the pitch]. I think this time it helped them play freely. Since the range of shots increased, I think it will have a positive impact in the T20 format,” Salahuddin told the media yesterday.

Sylhet Strikers reached their first BPL final after they defeated Rangpur Riders by 19 runs in the second qualifier in Dhaka. They will take on three-time champions Comilla Victorians – also last season’s winners – in the final on February 16.

The second season of the International League T20 (ILT20) will begin on January 13, 2024.

The UAE-based T20 league announced the starting date for the second edition on Saturday, less than a week after Gulf Giants were crowned inaugural champions in Dubai.

“Following the huge success of the DP World ILT20 2023, work has begun on Season 2 which is set to commence from Saturday, 13 January 2024,” an ILT20 statement read. “Season 2 will be played on the same 34-match format with four playoffs including the final. The tournament schedule will be announced in due course.”

The early announcement of the date is unusual by itself for a T20 league circuit where launch dates and fixture lists are revealed closer to the time the league starts. It also means that there will likely be the same schedule crunch with the SA20, the Big Bash League and most likely the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as there was this year.
