bpl team – Nepal uçak kazası – What made Shaheen Afridi decide against going to BPL?

Shaheen Shah Afridi reportedly withdrew himself from Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after the conclusion of the home ODI series against New Zealand on Friday.

bpl team

The left-arm pacer, who was continuing his knee rehabilitation process with the national team during the series, will return to Lahore this week. Shaheen was allowed to remain with the team after the mutual decision taken by the interim selection committee led by Shahid Afridi and management.

According to the sources, Shaheen was looking forward to taking part in two-three BPL matches as part of his recovery process. But now, he will continue his rehabilitation at National High-Performance Center in Lahore to get ready for Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 8. Shaheen will lead defending champions Lahore Qalandars.

bpl match

The 22-year-old cricketer got injured in the final of T20 World Cup 2022. He was taken off the field after sustaining a knee injury while taking a catch off Shadab Khan.

bpl news

Since then, Shaheen has not taken part in competitive cricket and has remained under strict observation of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s medical team.

bpl schedule

It must be noted here that Shaheen is set to tie the knot with Shahid’s daughter Ansha on February 3. After Haris Rauf, who tied the knot last December with his class fellow Muzna Masood Malik, Shaheen’s wedding is going to be another star-studded one within two months’ time.

Both the cricketers, who are also good friends off the field, will represent Qalandars in PSL 8.

The much-anticipated eighth edition of PSL will take place from February 13 to March 19 in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan. The final schedule of PSL 8 will be announced in coming days.

bpl match

The incident occurred when Hasan, who was not playing in the game, instructed a teammate to take a strike, which led to a change in the opposing team’s bowling strategy and resulted in an argument between Hasan and the opposing captain and umpires.

bpl match – BPL 2023: Match 9, CCH vs FBA Match Prediction – Who will win today’s BPL match between CCH vs FBA?

Both Chattogram Challengers and Fortune Barishal have won one match each.

After losing their first game of the Bangladesh Premier League season, Chattogram Challengers (CCH) registered an important win in the previous match against Khulna Tigers and are set to host Fortune Barishal (FBA) on January 13 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. The Barishal-based side, on the other hand, managed to win their last match against Rangpur Riders and will eye for a win to improve their standing in the league.

bpl match

Their batting has been marvellous so far this season with the middle-order delivering on a consistent basis. Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran scored a brilliant half-century in the last match (52 off 41) while Mehidy Hasan Miraz accompanied him in the middle, scoring 43 off 29. Iftikhar Ahmed (25* off 18) and Karim Janat (21* off 14) too played their part as the team won their first match of the season by six wickets.

bpl news

When it comes to their bowling, they have plenty of options and thus the captain can try various things. They conceded more than 190 runs in the first match but managed to restrict the Riders to 160 and that is a massive positive. Chaturanga de Silva and Miraz notched two wickets in the last match while Shakib, Ebadot Hossain and Janat picked one each.

bpl schedule

Coming back to the Challengers, the Shuvagata Hom-led side completely dominated Khulna Tigers in the last match. Opener Usman Khan scored a scintillating century (103* off 58) while his partner Max O’Dowd scored 58 off 50. Courtesy of their blistering partnership, Chattogram chased the target with ease. Coming to their bowling performance, two of their bowlers conceded more than 11 runs per over in the previous match and overall, there is a lot of room for improvement.

bpl news – A need for growing T20 bowling skills

It was Fortune Barishal skipper Shakib Al Hasan who said that bowlers have not quite turned up at the ninth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), especially during night fixtures where pitches offered big scores.

bpl news

As a format, the T20 mindset and culture is still in its primary period. The lack of T20s in the domestic circuit, except the BPL, has been brought up as a key reason for why it is more difficult to bring up players ready for the format.

The batters have found some rhythm and a few bowlers have shown their mettle so far, but as the Chattogram phase begins on Friday – with Chattogram Challengers taking on Fortune Barishal in the day’s opening fixture – the onus will be on the bowlers to respond in kind on wickets where runs are expected.

bpl schedule

Barishal’s Ebadot Hossain talked about the same need for improvement. Although he referred to the quicks, spinners need to get on their game too.

“Chattogram’s wickets are always batting-friendly. The fast bowlers need to improve their skill and bowl intelligently. Given that wickets are friendly for batters, the pacers with more skill will do better compared to others,” Ebadot said while talking to reporters at Chattogram yesterday.

bpl team

The national team pacer was not just talking about BPL success. He himself was at the receiving end of a bitter end to Bangladesh’s Asia Cup campaign last year, when he bagged crucial wickets but Sri Lanka targeted him at the death and took him for runs to seize the game away from the Tigers. With ICC wickets providing sporting surfaces at the very least, it is the need of the hour to get accustomed to bowling on batting-friendly surfaces.India recently scored over 400 runs in the third ODI in Chattogram but the Bangladesh bowlers can take valuable lessons from the experience.

Sylhet Strikers skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is the leading wicket-taker with seven wickets in this BPL alongside Al Amin Hossain. Mashrafe has brought his experience and new-ball bowling skills and has not been hit for too many runs. Al Amin though suffered, conceding an economy rate of over nine. Sylhet’s other pace duo Rejaur Rahman Raja and Mohammad Amir are second on the list with six wickets. The freedom to express themselves has not only allowed batters but also the bowlers of Sylhet to shine.

bpl scores

“Raja bagged four wickets in the first game of the Dhaka phase. Everyone said that although the wicket was good, Raja bowled well. Wickets got better and better after that in Dhaka. Chattogram is always good, so if we can do well on these surfaces, it will help in the upcoming World Cup,” said Ebadot.

When batters were able to show superiority, bowlers were not often on the mark. The yorkers have not come through while slower deliveries have been picked off when the surface has not held up slightly.

“You have to be accurate with your yorkers and slowers,” he reminded, with death-bowling still a headache for the national side.

bpl match

Ebadot said he has been working with his Bangladesh teammate and Comilla Victorians pacer Mustafizur Rahman to develop his cutters.

“My strength is to bowl fast and I have the yorker going for me. Along with that I am working on cutters and their accuracy. Mustafizur is good at cutters and I was learning from him. He changed the grip of my slower bouncers and it helped me,” he said.

Working as a unit always works for pacers. Ebadot has Khaled Ahmed in his side. If the pacers can get their execution right in these BPL tracks, it will be the best thing for the national team.

bpl schedule – Shakib finds some positives in BPL at last

“Everything is on a break,” Bangladesh’s Test and T20I skipper Shakib Al Hasan said when asked about his reaction to umpiring in the BPL at an event organised by Yamaha, only a day after he had made headlines for getting into the field of play before his side Fortune Barishal’s innings.

bpl schedule

The all-rounder has already made headlines for his criticism of the BPL since the ninth edition of the tournament began, stating he could do a better job than the current organisers if he were CEO. At another commercial event a little later, he said it would be better to be board president than CEO.

bpl news

Shakib accepted the fine for a level 1 breach of the BCB’s code of conduct for entering the field, but it remains to be seen whether the all-rounder has had enough of going after the BPL’s organisation.

bpl match

Despite the shortcomings of the BPL this time around, Shakib found some positives from a cricketer’s perspective, not getting into the logistical challenges left unmet. Yet, he reminded of difficulty playing T20s in Mirpur.

bpl scores

“The pitch is very good this year. Getting such pitches in Mirpur is unexpected. You have to credit the curator for that. That’s why runs are being scored and games are going well. It’s exciting,” Shakib said.

bpl team

While the night games have produced runs, it still remains a bit difficult during the afternoon games for batters. A few local batters, a majority from the Sylhet Strikers, have started the BPL on the right foot.

“[Nazmul Hossain] Shanto, Towhid Hridoy and Zakir [Hasan] have done well. The best thing is that local batters are doing well and the pitch deserves credit,” he said.

However, Shakib also pointed out that local bowlers are yet to really make a case for themselves. “Bowlers are not doing well. We have to learn how to bowl on these pitches now,” he said.

While any fiery remarks have been put on hold, when the action takes to the field at Chattogram, it remains to be seen whether Shakib will go from ‘break’ to action again.

bpl team – Mashrafe sees silver lining amidst lacklustre BPL

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) newcomers Sylhet Strikers are in terrific form. In the first five days of BPL9, Sylhet had four matches scheduled, all of which they won.

Naturally, skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s leadership is being praised after such sparkling performance of the team.

bpl team

However, after Sylhet’s win over Dhaka Dominators on Tuesday, Mashrafe credited the entire team for the brilliant start to their maiden season.

bpl scores

“Everyone in the team has been trying hard from the get-go. You never know what will happen on the field. We are trying to do right things off the field in hopes that our efforts will reflect on the field. It’s not just about me, it’s about the entire team,” Mashrafe told the media on Tuesday.

bpl match

Franchises from Sylhet have never fared well at the BPL. In the second edition, Sylhet Royals had made it to the semifinal, which remains the highest success for a team from the region.

This year, Sylhet roped in Mashrafe as a direct signing before the players’ draft and then assembled a team around him.

bpl news

Sylhet began their campaign with an eight-wicket win over Chattogram Challengers, followed it up by a six-wicket win over Fortune Barishal, a five-wicket win over Comilla Victorians and a 62-run victory over Dhaka Dominators.

Four wins in as many games have placed Sylhet at the top of the points-table with eight points.

Meanwhile, the first phase of BPL9 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka ended on Tuesday. The teams are now in Chattogram for the second leg which will begin on 13 January.

bpl schedule

The ninth edition of the tournament has been criticised for its mismanagement, poor umpiring and a lack of star power. However, Mashrafe sees a silver lining amidst all of this as according to the pacer the pitches at the SBNS during the first leg were ideal for T20 cricket, something which was not seen in earlier editions of the league.

“When the wicket is good, playing good cricket becomes easier. The wickets I saw here (SBNS), were excellent. In wickets like these, we can nurture some good cricketers. This is a big positive thing that amidst so much criticism, the action on the ground has been good,” said the 39-year-old pacer.

The group-phase of this year’s BPL does not have the Decision Review System (DRS) technology. Instead, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is using Additional Decision Review System (ADRS), a technology that has proven to be mostly ineffective in helping the third umpire make the right decision.

Questions have been raised on the standard of umpiring as well, with multiple players getting into heated arguments with the umpires on the field.

Mashrafe feels that the umpires have to take responsibility to improve the standard of umpiring, “At the end of the day, some questions still remain. But if the umpires can’t improve their standard, it’s their failure. Umpires can be brought in from other countries. But I would say we need to give our umpires a chance. If they can learn something from all of this, then it would be good.”

“There will be some wrong decisions, that’s bound to happen as there is no snickometer or hotspot. I think the umpires need to make some brave calls, which we see in foreign league or during international matches. The umpires also need to take some steps to set a higher standard.”

bpl scores – BPL is Mashrafe’s last tournament in cricket career, thinks his father

Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is still playing cricket with 7 surgeries. But he is still hotcake in events like BPL-DPL. However, he’s getting aged. The 39-year-old Mashrafe will retire from cricket after this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), thinks his father Golam Mortaza.

bpl scores

Father rushes to the stadium to watch his son play in BPL. He still has no lack of enthusiasm to see his son play. But thinking about Mashrafe, his request is to put away the bat-pad-shoe.

bpl match

Golam Mortaza said after Mashrafe’s team Sylhet Strikers’ straight fourth win on Tuesday, “Everyone is seeing the condition of his legs. Today in the field he’s struggling. It is not possible to play cricket like this. How long is this possible? I think this should be the end. Old injured leg, struggling. It’s not about strength here.”

bpl news

However, he will not give any advice to Mashrafe to quit the game. He believes that Mashrafe understands his own affairs best, “I haven’t talked to him about this yet. As long as he has the strength of mind… he knows very well what is possible and what is not possible. I have nothing to say. If he thinks it is possible, he will continue it, if he doesn’t think it is possible, he will not continue it.”

bpl schedule

Many hope that Mashrafe will work for Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after his playing career. Mashrafe’s father also wants his son’s cricket knowledge to be useful for the country. He added, “We want him to do what he knows best. He can do much better if he works at BCB. I can say it emphatically. Everyone understands that if he works with cricket, he will do very well. I certainly would.”

bpl match – Shakib, Nurul, Anamul fined for misconduct

Fortune Barishal captain Shakib Al Hasan, opener Anamul Haque and Rangpur Riders captain Nurul Hasan were fined 15 per cent of their match fees each for their misconduct during their Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Shakib and Nurul were fined for their part in the drama over who will take first strike for Barishal during their chase and which bowler would open the attack for Rangpur.

bpl match

Anamul, on the other hand, was penalised for arguing with the on-field umpire after the third umpire upheld the original lbw decision taken against him, which he believed was wrong.

The players accepted that their behaviour was out of line and accepted the misconduct charges laid on them by match referee Akhtar Ahmad.

The first incident occurred at the start of Barishal’s 159-run chase against Rangpur.

bpl news

Left-arm spinner Rakibul Hasan was set to open the attack for Rangpur and Barishal’s Chaturanga de Silva was ready to take first strike.

But seeing the left-hander Chaturanga on strike, Rangpur skipper Nurul took the ball from Rakibul and handed it to right-arm off-spinner Mahedi Hasan.

Seeing this change of bowlers, Barishal openers also swapped places, with right-hander Anamul Haque going to the striker’s end.

bpl schedule

After that, Rangpur once again gave the ball to Rakibul to open the attack.

Rangpur’s insistence to bowl a left-arm bowler against a right-hander or a right-arm bowler against a left-hander and Barishal’s intention to avoid that anyhow caused all the trouble.

When this drama was taking place at the middle, Shakib stormed in from the dugout and went straight to square leg umpire Gazi Sohel.

As per the rules, Shakib is not allowed to come into the field like that. But that didn’t stop the Barishal captain from getting into a confrontation with the umpire.

The argument continued for around five more minutes. Once Shakib left the field, left-handed Chaturanga took first strike against left-arm spinner Rakibul. In the same over, Chaturanga was dismissed by Rakibul.

The second incident occurred in the fourth over of the chase.

Anamul was hit on the pads and given lbw. But the opener claimed he touched the ball with his bat and reviewed the decision.

The third umpire used the much debated Additional Decision Review System (ADRS) to review the decision and chose to uphold the umpire’s call.

Anamul was infuriated by the decision and hung around to let his displeasure known to the umpires before finally leaving the field furious.

But in reply, another Karachi-born star from Quetta Gladiators, Usman Khan showed his class.

Usman Khan’s 58-ball knock, in which he remained not out on 103, helped Chattogram Challengers chase the total for the loss of just one wicket.

bpl schedule – Is BPL drawing its final breath?

Every passing season, the size of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is shrinking. The gloss of a franchise league is no longer there. Even Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials are also no longer vocal about BPL that doesn’t have star power like before.

One of the BCB officials who earlier used to make tall claims about BPL being the world’s second best franchise tournament after the Indian Premier League (IPL), on Monday with a defeated tone said, “I said that back then, I’m not saying anything like that now!”

In world cricket, franchise leagues are like a product and BCB has fallen behind in marketing their product, BPL, to the world. SA20 will raise its curtain in South Africa on Tuesday, on 13 January, International League Twenty20 (ILT20) will begin in Dubai.

Naturally, big names in cricket have chosen those cash-rich tournaments over BPL. So, there is no other choice but to accept that Comilla Victorians’ English batter Dawid Malan as the biggest star in BPL this year.

After Monday’s match between Sylhet Strikers and Comilla Victorians, it seemed that there is a bigger star in this year’s BPL then Malan, someone who is not even taking part in this tournament as a cricketer!

Legendary former fast bowler from the Caribbean islands, Curtly Ambrose, landed in Dhaka on Sunday to work as a commentator in BPL. On Monday, just as Ambrose stepped onto the field after the first match to analyse the game, photo journalists, television crew and reporters surrounded him, which gave a feeling that BPL has at least more than one star.

bpl schedule

BPL, a tournament formatted like IPL, was the brainchild of the former BCB president and the current finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal. The main intention behind the tournament, which kick-started in 2012, was to improve the performances of local cricketers in T20. They would get to share the dressingroom with big names, enrich their T20 knowledge and learn a lot about the game– that was the hope.

The hopes of making bank was also there. But BCB has always said that their biggest motivation behind organizing BPL is to improve the standard of local cricketers in T20s, not to swell their coffers.

Whether money making was the primary goal or secondary– from the very start BPL hasn’t brought any significant riches to BCB owing to its faulty and over-ambitious financial structure. Moreover, BCB has had to pay the salaries of players themselves and pay the price for roping in franchises which are riddled with problems.

BCB, later, was forced to curtail the financial structure, reduce players’ salaries and franchise fees.

BPL has perhaps succeeded in imprinting the T20 format in the psyche of local cricketers, it has also opened up a path for young cricketers to make a name for themselves. But as its by-product, Bangladesh cricket has had to bear the brunt of mismanagement, spot-fixing and other such big-scale controversies.

All this has earned BPL derogatory abbreviations like ‘Due (Bokeya) Premier League’ and ‘Controversy (Bitorko) Premier League’ among a few.

These abbreviations were given by the naysayers. But now, if even a BCB official says in a casual setting that BPL stands for ‘Bangladesh Pain League’, it would be hardly surprising.

BCB also seemingly doesn’t have any high hopes on BPL anymore. Actually, they are exhausted by the problems accompanying the tournament. Just the topic of DRS has caused them so much distress!

Although the machineries and devices of DRS technology are currently inside the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, this technology is not in operation in the tournament. The reason, according to the BCB, is that they couldn’t find any expert to operate the technology. All technicians have already been ‘booked’ by SA20 and ILT20.

Question remains whether this explanation is even believable. Why didn’t Real Impact, the production company BCB signed an agreement with for the BPL, rope in a hawk-eye expert for the tournament?

It’s true that even with the help of DRS technology, umpires sometimes make controversial decisions. But that’s where DRS comes in, as it helps reduce the risk of wrong and controversial decisions as much as possible.

Even the bilateral series between Zimbabwe and Ireland, which is set to begin on 12 January, is expected to have the DRS technology available. So, for a tournament like BPL, where cricketers from various countries are taking part, not having DRS technology available is guaranteed to create controversy.

BCB knew it all, but still chose not to ensure DRS from the start of the tournament. A big reason behind this decision could’ve been to curb the cost. It costs $8-8.5 thousand per match for hawk-eye technology. To have DRS available in every match would’ve cost BCB nearly $400,000.

Maybe, BCB felt spending so much for a tournament that is slowly becoming ‘low profile’, was excessive. But the question is, as they are not spending for the technology, they should’ve at least cut that sum from the money they paid the production company.

BCB could hand over BPL to some other company to breathe new life into the tournament. A number of Indian organisations have apparently offered huge sums of money to buy the organising rights of BPL. Two companies from Dubai have also showed interest to buy franchises.

But BCB doesn’t want to go down that path right now, and is determined not to do so in the future too. BPL is Bangladesh’s tournament, and they want to keep it as such. And solving this problem could cause fresh trouble for them.

Many franchise T20 tournaments around the world are caught in the web of betting. BCB fears that BPL could also get caught in that web.

However, has BCB managed to save themselves by keeping the tournament their own?

In accordance with the country’s law, BCB has a ‘zero tolerance’ policy for betting and anything related with betting. This is clearly stated in the financial agreements.

However, in the local and overseas broadcast of the tournament, advertisements of betting related organisations are being shown. Moreover, advertisements of those organisinations are being added virtually on the advertising mats.

These organisations are not directly involved in betting but they are related with betting websites. Just a few months back, Shakib Al Hasan was forced to cut ties with Betwinner news, which wasn’t a betting site but was owned by a betting site. But now, that same organisation is showing advertisements in BPL, BCB’s own product.

In countries where betting is legal, betting organisations a lot of the times sponsor cricket tournaments. In Bangladesh betting is illegal, hence they can’t become sponsors. But they are making their way inside BPL using various loopholes.

Now the question is, how long will BCB be able to save BPL from this web of betting sites? Or will the tournament which is losing against US Dollars and Dirhams will breathe its last breath and disappear forever!

Because of such fears, an influential official of the BCB had said grudgingly– Why don’t we shut down BPL!
