Angelo Mathews Leads B-Love Kandy to Maiden Championship Victory

In a gripping final showdown at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on August 20, Angelo Mathews, standing in as captain, led B-Love Kandy to their inaugural victory in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023. The thrilling contest saw Kandy secure a heart-stopping five-wicket win over Dambulla Aura in front of a packed stadium.

Facing a target of 148 runs, B-Love Kandy managed to clinch the victory with just one ball to spare, largely thanks to Mathews’ resolute unbeaten innings of 25 runs from 21 balls and a quick cameo from Asif Ali, who contributed 19 runs off 10 balls.

This remarkable win came in the absence of LPL 2023’s highest wicket-taker, highest run-scorer, and captain, Wanindu Hasaranga, who was sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Angelo Mathews, the seasoned campaigner, played a pivotal role in ensuring that Kandy claimed the coveted LPL crown in the tournament’s fourth edition.

Opting to bat first, Dambulla Aura managed to build two substantial 50-run partnerships. However, the Kandy bowlers put up a valiant effort to restrict Dambulla to a total of 147 runs for the loss of four wickets within the allotted 20 overs.

Kandy’s opening duo of Kamindu Mendis (44) and Mohammad Haris (26) got their team off to a flying start, amassing 47 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal added to the momentum with a brisk 22-ball 24 before being dismissed by Binura Fernando.

When Angelo Mathews walked to the crease in the 13th over, Kandy were positioned at 95-2. The experienced Mathews displayed remarkable composure under pressure as Kandy faced a sudden dip in fortunes, slipping from 94-1 to 107-4 in just 21 deliveries. Mathews’ innings of 25 runs included three boundaries, and he refrained from taking unnecessary risks, guiding his team to the target in the final over.

Despite Noor Ahmed’s commendable bowling effort for Dambulla Aura, where he took three wickets for 27 runs, it wasn’t enough to secure victory for his team.

Reflecting on the thrilling triumph, Angelo Mathews commented, “I had to draw upon all my experience from the past 15 years. I had to remain calm. We knew the pitch was favorable, and the target was achievable. Asif Ali and Lahiru Madushanka were outstanding in the closing stages. We were fortunate to prevail despite numerous injuries. The last three games were physically demanding for us.”

Wanindu Hasaranga, who collected the winner’s trophy and a $100,000 cheque from Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva, was not only named the Player of the Series but also finished as both the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker in LPL 2023. Expressing his delight at his contributions, Hasaranga stated that he is thrilled because he made valuable contributions with the bat. Whether he is batting or bowling, he always strives to give his best, whether he is leading the team or not. He was also named Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition, but this one is even more special as he made a significant impact with the bat.

Overall, Angelo Mathews’ exceptional leadership and calm demeanor guided B-Love Kandy to their maiden LPL title in a nail-biting final, overshadowing the absence of their star captain Wanindu Hasaranga due to injury. The victory showcased the resilience and determination of the team in the face of adversity.

Bangladesh and India Share ODI Trophy in Dramatic Series Finale

On 22 July, 2023, Bangladesh and India shared the ODI championship title as the decisive third match of the series culminated in a thrilling tie in Mirpur. The gripping finale unfolded with India needing just one run from the last four balls. However, the match took a dramatic twist when Marufa Akter managed to get No. 11 Meghna Singh caught behind, leaving Jemimah Rodrigues stranded after her pivotal contribution of 33 runs off 45 balls in the latter part of the chase.

The match’s foundation was laid by Fargana Hoque’s impressive knock of 107 runs, marking the first century by a Bangladesh batter in Women’s ODIs. Her performance significantly bolstered the host team’s innings, resulting in their second-highest total in the ODI format.

India’s pursuit of the 226-run target progressed steadily, reaching 191 for 4 in the 42nd over of their chase. However, a pivotal moment transformed the game’s course. Harleen Deol, who had been performing well with a score of 77 – her personal best in ODIs, attempted a run that wasn’t there, leading to her run-out. Fahima Khatun’s swift fielding and accurate throw to Nigar Sultana resulted in Deol being caught short of her crease, sparking a collapse. India lost six wickets for 34 runs, ultimately being bowled out for 225, resulting in a 1-1 tie in the three-match series.

Although tied ODIs usually prompt a Super Over, this option wasn’t exercised due to the fact that the extra time allotted for the tie-breaker had already expired by the end of the 99.3 overs in the match.

Nigar’s agile effort to run out Deol served as a redemption of sorts for the Bangladesh wicketkeeper, who had earlier missed a chance to dismiss Smriti Mandhana during the chase.

The talented fast bowler Marufa’s opening delivery was executed with precision – a well-angled length ball outside off. Although Mandhana attempted a slash, she edged the ball. However, Nigar couldn’t hold onto the catch, diving to her left.

Mandhana capitalized on this opportunity and went on to score 59 runs off 85 balls, forming a crucial partnership of 107 runs with Deol for the third wicket.

Bangladesh made their mark early, with Marufa’s outstanding catch dismissing Shafali Verma, who had replaced Priya Punia. The swift fielder initially stretched her right hand to intercept an uppish drive, but after the ball popped out, she dived full-length to her right to complete the catch. Additionally, Sultana Khatun’s dismissal of Yastika Bhatia reduced India to 32 for 2 in the fifth over.

Deol’s entry at No. 4 yielded positive results as she capitalized on Marufa’s width to execute powerful shots. Mandhana and Deol both achieved half-centuries off 74 and 72 balls respectively. However, Fahima’s deceptive bounce led to Mandhana’s dismissal.

Harmanpreet Kaur contributed 14 runs before exiting the field in a dramatic manner, expressing her dissatisfaction with the umpire’s decision. The nature of her dismissal – whether lbw or caught at slip – was initially unclear.

Following Deol’s run-out, subsequent wickets tumbled, with Nahida taking two crucial wickets in three balls. Despite the setbacks, Rodrigues held her end, but Marufa secured the final wicket after briefly leaving the field due to an ankle concern caused by a 30-minute rain delay. The victory prompted cheers from the crowd at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Most Runs in PSL 2023 go to Mohammad Rizwan from Multan Sultans

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 has kicked off with a bang, and some of the top batsmen are already making significant contributions for their respective teams, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting tournament. In the early matches, seven players announced their presence with impressive half-centuries, making a strong statement from the outset.

The season opener featured Lahore Qalandars facing off against the previous edition’s runners-up, Multan Sultans, in a thrilling encounter that saw the defending champions narrowly clinch victory by just one run. Fakhar Zaman, the Qalandars’ opener, who had been the top run-scorer in the 2022 season with 588 runs in 13 matches, continued his fine form. He played a brilliant innings of 66 runs off 42 balls, propelling his team to a challenging total of 175/6. Zaman’s stellar knock also saw him become only the second player in PSL history to cross the 2000-run mark.

In response, Multan Sultans’ captain, Mohammad Rizwan, played a fiery innings, scoring 75 runs off 50 balls, but it ultimately proved insufficient as his team fell agonizingly short by just one run.

The second fixture of the season was another thrilling contest, with Peshawar Zalmi edging out Karachi Kings by a mere two runs. PSL’s all-time leading run-scorer, Babar Azam, along with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, both notched up half-centuries to power Peshawar Zalmi to a formidable total of 199/5. Despite valiant efforts from Shoaib Malik (52 off 34) and Imad Wasim (80 off 47) that brought Karachi Kings close to a remarkable victory, the Zalmi bowlers held their nerve and secured the win.

Meanwhile, Multan Sultans’ batter Rilee Rossouw, known for his consistency in T20 leagues worldwide, showcased his skills with a fantastic fifty against Quetta Gladiators on February 15. This performance helped Multan Sultans secure their first points in the PSL 2023 standings.

Among the local talents to keep an eye on are Shan Masood and Mirza Baig. Shan Masood, with over 50 international matches for Pakistan under his belt, brings experience to the table, while the young and promising Mirza Baig is eager to impress selectors with a series of valuable contributions.

In terms of the top run-scorers in the Pakistan Super League 2023, Mohammad Rizwan from Multan Sultans leads the chart with 516 runs in 11 matches, followed closely by Babar Azam from Peshawar Zalmi, who has accumulated 416 runs in 9 matches. Imad Wasim of Karachi Kings is also among the top run-scorers with 404 runs in 10 matches.
