The 10th season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL 2024), a Twenty20 cricket competition run by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), will take place in January and February 2024.

The BPL 2024 is set to feature competitive teams including Rangpur Riders, Chattogram Challengers, Comilla Victorians, Minister Group Dhaka, Khulna Tigers, and Sylhet Sunrisers, promising an exciting and action-packed cricket season ahead.

The reigning champions, Comilla Victorians, clinched victory in the previous season of BPL 2023, asserting their dominance on the cricket field. On Thursday, February 16, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Comilla Victorians won the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2023 championship after defeating Sylhet Strikers by a score of 7 wickets. 

The Comilla Victorians secured their victory with a sensational performance, earning themselves a well-deserved reward of 2 Crore BDT. In the climactic final match, Johnson Charles of the Comilla Victorians emerged as the Player of the Match, showcasing a brilliant unbeaten innings of 79 runs off 52 balls and earning a well-earned reward of 5 Lakhs BDT for his exceptional performance. Najmul Hossain Shanto of the Sylhet Strikers was named the Player of the Tournament, earning a remarkable prize of 10 Lakhs BDT for his outstanding cricketing prowess.

Rangpur Riders recorded an emphatic six-wicket win against the table-toppers Sylhet Strikers on 27 January at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Azmatullah Omarzai and Hasan Mahmud took three wickets each for Rangpur.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib scored 41 runs for Sylhet, but Rony Talukdar’s not-out 41 runs helped Rangpur seal the victory. The Dhaka Dominators also secured a 24-run win over the Khulna Tigers. Dhaka posted 108 runs in 19.4 overs after batting first, and Taskin Ahmed’s four wickets sealed the win for Dhaka.

bpl schedule – Bayern Munich – Pakistan’s Wahab, Amad star in BPL

Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz and Amad Butt were among the top performers as Khulna Tigers eased past Rangpur Riders by nine wickets on Tuesday during the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Riaz bagged figures of 4-14 in four overs, meanwhile Butt claimed 3-16 in three overs.

Riaz and Butt helped Khulna restrict Rangpur to 129 in 20 overs with Mahedi Hasan top-scoring with 38.

In reply, Khulna reached the target in 18.2 overs for the loss of one wicket.

Opener Tamim Iqbal scored an unbeaten 60 runs in 47 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes.

For his brilliant performance, Riaz bagged the award for player of the match.

Pakistan’s Azam Khan was also part of the winning side but he didn’t get a chance to bat.

Meanwhile, three Pakistan players were in action for the Riders with veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik leading the side. All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz and pacer Haris Rauf were also part of the team.

Malik could only score nine runs in 14 balls, whereas Nawaz and Rauf went wicketless with the ball.

Sylhet Strikers are currently at the top of the table with 10 points after winning all five of their games. Fortune Barishal are in second place with six points after four matches.

Rangpur Riders and Chattogram Challengers are in third and fourth place, respectively, with four points each.

Khulna Tigers, Comilla Victorians and Dhaka Dominators are in the final three positions, respectively, of the table with two points each after four matches.

bpl team – Alanyaspor Galatasaray – BPL 2023: Imad Wasim proves his mettle

Pakistan’s all-rounder Imad Wasim was on song with the ball in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2023 on Monday.

Imad, who is representing Sylhet Strikers in this year’s BPL, took three wickets for 20 runs in his four overs against Dhaka Dominators.

The left-arm spinner bowled brilliantly to help his team dominate with the ball. Imad’s valuable spell helped Strikers restrict Dominators to 128-7.

After taking three wickets, Imad became the joint top wicket-taker of BPL. Imad alongside Robiul Haque, Mohammad Amir, Mashrafe Mortaza, and Al-Amin Hossain has seven wickets in his account so far.

With the bat, Imad scored just 11 runs off 20 balls without a boundary. Mohammad Haris of Pakistan smashed 44 off 32 balls to make the chase easier for Strikers.

Due to losing a couple of quick wickets in the middle overs, Strikers could chase the target in the last over.  

It must be noted here that more than a dozen Pakistani players were picked for BPL 2023.

bpl team – Mashrafe sees silver lining amidst lacklustre BPL

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) newcomers Sylhet Strikers are in terrific form. In the first five days of BPL9, Sylhet had four matches scheduled, all of which they won.

Naturally, skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s leadership is being praised after such sparkling performance of the team.

However, after Sylhet’s win over Dhaka Dominators on Tuesday, Mashrafe credited the entire team for the brilliant start to their maiden season.

“Everyone in the team has been trying hard from the get-go. You never know what will happen on the field. We are trying to do right things off the field in hopes that our efforts will reflect on the field. It’s not just about me, it’s about the entire team,” Mashrafe told the media on Tuesday.

Franchises from Sylhet have never fared well at the BPL. In the second edition, Sylhet Royals had made it to the semifinal, which remains the highest success for a team from the region.

This year, Sylhet roped in Mashrafe as a direct signing before the players’ draft and then assembled a team around him.

Sylhet began their campaign with an eight-wicket win over Chattogram Challengers, followed it up by a six-wicket win over Fortune Barishal, a five-wicket win over Comilla Victorians and a 62-run victory over Dhaka Dominators.

Four wins in as many games have placed Sylhet at the top of the points-table with eight points.

Meanwhile, the first phase of BPL9 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka ended on Tuesday. The teams are now in Chattogram for the second leg which will begin on 13 January.

The ninth edition of the tournament has been criticised for its mismanagement, poor umpiring and a lack of star power. However, Mashrafe sees a silver lining amidst all of this as according to the pacer the pitches at the SBNS during the first leg were ideal for T20 cricket, something which was not seen in earlier editions of the league.

“When the wicket is good, playing good cricket becomes easier. The wickets I saw here (SBNS), were excellent. In wickets like these, we can nurture some good cricketers. This is a big positive thing that amidst so much criticism, the action on the ground has been good,” said the 39-year-old pacer.

The group-phase of this year’s BPL does not have the Decision Review System (DRS) technology. Instead, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is using Additional Decision Review System (ADRS), a technology that has proven to be mostly ineffective in helping the third umpire make the right decision.

Questions have been raised on the standard of umpiring as well, with multiple players getting into heated arguments with the umpires on the field.

Mashrafe feels that the umpires have to take responsibility to improve the standard of umpiring, “At the end of the day, some questions still remain. But if the umpires can’t improve their standard, it’s their failure. Umpires can be brought in from other countries. But I would say we need to give our umpires a chance. If they can learn something from all of this, then it would be good.”

“There will be some wrong decisions, that’s bound to happen as there is no snickometer or hotspot. I think the umpires need to make some brave calls, which we see in foreign league or during international matches. The umpires also need to take some steps to set a higher standard.”
