Picking the Top BPL Team: Who Holds the Title?

The most recent edition of the BPL in 2023 was claimed by Comilla Victorians. The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) stands as the top T20 cricket competition in the nation, overseen by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the governing body for cricket in the country.

Originating in 2011, the inaugural BPL season took place in 2012, spanning Dhaka and Chittagong. Since then, the Bangladesh Premier League has successfully completed eight seasons. The BPL’s debut champions were Dhaka Gladiators, triumphing over Barisal Burners in the 2012 final. Dhaka Gladiators also secured victory in the 2013 edition of the tournament.

On the other hand, Comilla Victorians, who clinched their first title in 2015, have emerged as the most accomplished squad in BPL history, securing four championships. Comilla Victorians recently secured the 2023 title by prevailing over Sylhet Strikers in the final match.

Other teams such as Dhaka Dynamites, Rangpur Riders, and Rajshahi Royals have each seized the BPL title once. A comprehensive list of BPL winners is as follows: Dhaka Gladiators (2012, 2013), Comilla Victorians (2015, 2023), Dhaka Dynamites, Rangpur Riders, and Rajshahi Royals (each with one victory).

Comilla Victorians – 4 BPL titles

Comilla Victorians have secured victory in the BPL on four notable occasions: in 2015, 2019, 2022, and 2023. The franchise hailing from Comilla made their debut in the Bangladesh Premier League during the 2015 season.

During the 2015 showdown, the Victorians engaged in a remarkable last-ball finish against Barisal Bulls, emerging victorious in the final clash. A standout performance by Ashar Zaidi, the Pakistani all-rounder, earned him the title of Player of the Tournament. He showcased exceptional skills across all facets of the game, contributing 215 runs and claiming 17 wickets for the Victorians throughout their triumphant journey.

Moving on to the 2019 final, Tamim Iqbal left a lasting impact with an astonishing and undefeated 141 runs off 61 balls. This impressive feat stands as the second-highest individual score in BPL history. Fueled by this remarkable innings, the Victorians secured a 17-run victory over Dhaka Dynamites in the championship match.

The franchise’s third BPL victory arrived in 2022. Sunil Narine took the spotlight as the match-winner, showcasing his prowess with both bat and ball during the final match. He contributed 57 runs and secured two crucial wickets. In the same season, Victorians’ fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman emerged as the top wicket-taker, claiming an impressive 19 wickets.

The most recent title for the Comilla Victorians was clinched in the BPL 2023 season, where they emerged triumphant in the grand finale against Sylhet Strikers. This victory marked their consecutive championship win.

Dhaka Gladiators – 2 BPL titles

The Dhaka Gladiators stood as the initial of the two Dhaka-based franchises to secure victory in the Bangladesh Premier League. Furthermore, they achieved the distinction of becoming the pioneer team to capture consecutive BPL championships through their triumphs in the initial two seasons.

In the inaugural edition of the tournament held in 2012, Shakib Al Hasan’s exceptional performance served as the driving force behind the Gladiators’ title victory. Shakib’s notable contribution of 280 runs and 15 wickets across 11 matches led to him being crowned as the Player of the Tournament. Despite finishing third in the league stage, the Gladiators outshone Barisal Burners in the final, clinching an eight-wicket victory with 26 balls to spare.

Conversely, the BPL of 2013 witnessed the Gladiators claiming the top position on the points table. Guided by the leadership of Mashrafe Mortaza, the team secured their second championship triumph through an impressive 43-run win over Chittagong Kings in the final. Shakib Al Hasan once again emerged as the standout performer, earning the Player of the Tournament accolade for his remarkable display of 329 runs and 15 wickets.

Outstanding Performers from BPL 2023

On February 16, 2023, Comilla Victorians successfully retained their BPL championship by overcoming Sylhet Strikers, and this combined XI prominently includes players from both squads. Here are some of the players that stand out on the list:

Najmul Hossain Shanto (Sylhet Strikers)

Runs 516, Average 39.69, Strike rate 116.74

In a turnaround season, Shanto emerged as a force to reckon with. By accumulating 516 runs, he etched his name as the first Bangladeshi to surpass 500 runs in a BPL season. His unbeaten 89 and consistent batting display made him the tournament’s leading run-scorer. Notably, his half-century in the final was pivotal. Shanto’s newfound stability bodes well for his international aspirations.

Khushdil Shah (Comilla Victorians)

Runs 239, Average 47.80, Strike rate 161.48

Khushdil Shah made his mark as a power-hitting middle-order asset. Despite a slow start on Dhaka pitches, he turned things around for Comilla Victorians. His strike rate of 161.48 underscored his aggressive style, complemented by effective left-arm spin bowling. Khushdil’s ability to rescue his team from early setbacks was a highlight, and his dependable fielding added to his all-round value.

Rony Talukdar (Rangpur Riders)

Runs 425, Average 35.41, Strike rate 129.17

Rony Talukdar, representing Rangpur Riders, showcased his prowess in the BPL with a standout season. Surpassing his previous record of 317 runs at a strike rate of 140.26 in 2018-19, Talukdar excelled this time. He specialized in quick starts for his team, notably averaging 61.50 during the Powerplay, even though he faced four dismissals within the first six overs. His strong presence among the leading run-scorers of the tournament positions him in direct competition with players like Mohammad Naim, Munim Shahriar, and Anamul Haque, all vying for opportunities in the T20I squad.

Tanvir Islam (Comilla Victorians)

Wickets 17, Average 17.58, Economy rate 6.36

Standing out as a left-arm spinner in Bangladesh is no mean feat, but Tanvir Islam achieved just that. His accuracy and adaptability across all phases of the game were instrumental for the Victorians. Tanvir’s unique action, which lends dip to his deliveries, and his distinctive celebrations make him a standout prospect. A dependable bowler across T20 formats, Tanvir’s utility is undeniable.

Shakib Al Hasan (Fortune Barishal)

Wickets 10, Economy rate 6.31, Runs: 375, Strike rate: 174.41

A BPL mainstay, Shakib earned his place in the ESPNcricinfo BPL XI for a record seventh time. He led Fortune Barishal with finesse, especially in the initial stages when the team was on a roll. Although he faced a setback by batting lower down in the Eliminator, Shakib excelled with the ball, consistently taking wickets and maintaining an impressive economy rate.

Taskin Ahmed (Dhaka Dominators)

Wickets 10, Average 20.60, Economy rate 6.02

Taskin Ahmed shone as one of Bangladesh’s premier fast bowlers across formats. In the challenging context of a struggling Dhaka Dominators side, his performance stood out. His remarkable figures of 4 for 9, defending a modest total of 108 runs, showcased his match-winning capabilities. Taskin’s recurring appearances in the ESPNcricinfo BPL XI underline his prowess and value to the team.

bpl news – A need for growing T20 bowling skills

It was Fortune Barishal skipper Shakib Al Hasan who said that bowlers have not quite turned up at the ninth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), especially during night fixtures where pitches offered big scores.

bpl news

As a format, the T20 mindset and culture is still in its primary period. The lack of T20s in the domestic circuit, except the BPL, has been brought up as a key reason for why it is more difficult to bring up players ready for the format.

The batters have found some rhythm and a few bowlers have shown their mettle so far, but as the Chattogram phase begins on Friday – with Chattogram Challengers taking on Fortune Barishal in the day’s opening fixture – the onus will be on the bowlers to respond in kind on wickets where runs are expected.

bpl schedule

Barishal’s Ebadot Hossain talked about the same need for improvement. Although he referred to the quicks, spinners need to get on their game too.

“Chattogram’s wickets are always batting-friendly. The fast bowlers need to improve their skill and bowl intelligently. Given that wickets are friendly for batters, the pacers with more skill will do better compared to others,” Ebadot said while talking to reporters at Chattogram yesterday.

bpl team

The national team pacer was not just talking about BPL success. He himself was at the receiving end of a bitter end to Bangladesh’s Asia Cup campaign last year, when he bagged crucial wickets but Sri Lanka targeted him at the death and took him for runs to seize the game away from the Tigers. With ICC wickets providing sporting surfaces at the very least, it is the need of the hour to get accustomed to bowling on batting-friendly surfaces.India recently scored over 400 runs in the third ODI in Chattogram but the Bangladesh bowlers can take valuable lessons from the experience.

Sylhet Strikers skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is the leading wicket-taker with seven wickets in this BPL alongside Al Amin Hossain. Mashrafe has brought his experience and new-ball bowling skills and has not been hit for too many runs. Al Amin though suffered, conceding an economy rate of over nine. Sylhet’s other pace duo Rejaur Rahman Raja and Mohammad Amir are second on the list with six wickets. The freedom to express themselves has not only allowed batters but also the bowlers of Sylhet to shine.

bpl scores

“Raja bagged four wickets in the first game of the Dhaka phase. Everyone said that although the wicket was good, Raja bowled well. Wickets got better and better after that in Dhaka. Chattogram is always good, so if we can do well on these surfaces, it will help in the upcoming World Cup,” said Ebadot.

When batters were able to show superiority, bowlers were not often on the mark. The yorkers have not come through while slower deliveries have been picked off when the surface has not held up slightly.

“You have to be accurate with your yorkers and slowers,” he reminded, with death-bowling still a headache for the national side.

bpl match

Ebadot said he has been working with his Bangladesh teammate and Comilla Victorians pacer Mustafizur Rahman to develop his cutters.

“My strength is to bowl fast and I have the yorker going for me. Along with that I am working on cutters and their accuracy. Mustafizur is good at cutters and I was learning from him. He changed the grip of my slower bouncers and it helped me,” he said.

Working as a unit always works for pacers. Ebadot has Khaled Ahmed in his side. If the pacers can get their execution right in these BPL tracks, it will be the best thing for the national team.

bpl schedule – Shakib finds some positives in BPL at last

“Everything is on a break,” Bangladesh’s Test and T20I skipper Shakib Al Hasan said when asked about his reaction to umpiring in the BPL at an event organised by Yamaha, only a day after he had made headlines for getting into the field of play before his side Fortune Barishal’s innings.

bpl schedule

The all-rounder has already made headlines for his criticism of the BPL since the ninth edition of the tournament began, stating he could do a better job than the current organisers if he were CEO. At another commercial event a little later, he said it would be better to be board president than CEO.

bpl news

Shakib accepted the fine for a level 1 breach of the BCB’s code of conduct for entering the field, but it remains to be seen whether the all-rounder has had enough of going after the BPL’s organisation.

bpl match

Despite the shortcomings of the BPL this time around, Shakib found some positives from a cricketer’s perspective, not getting into the logistical challenges left unmet. Yet, he reminded of difficulty playing T20s in Mirpur.

bpl scores

“The pitch is very good this year. Getting such pitches in Mirpur is unexpected. You have to credit the curator for that. That’s why runs are being scored and games are going well. It’s exciting,” Shakib said.

bpl team

While the night games have produced runs, it still remains a bit difficult during the afternoon games for batters. A few local batters, a majority from the Sylhet Strikers, have started the BPL on the right foot.

“[Nazmul Hossain] Shanto, Towhid Hridoy and Zakir [Hasan] have done well. The best thing is that local batters are doing well and the pitch deserves credit,” he said.

However, Shakib also pointed out that local bowlers are yet to really make a case for themselves. “Bowlers are not doing well. We have to learn how to bowl on these pitches now,” he said.

While any fiery remarks have been put on hold, when the action takes to the field at Chattogram, it remains to be seen whether Shakib will go from ‘break’ to action again.
